If you’re planning a Portugal holiday, the Algarve is a great destination to choose. This region has long been a favourite among travellers seeking sun, sand and a lively atmosphere – and it’s the ideal place to try out a variety of activities.
Indeed, if your idea of the perfect getaway involves more than just lying on the beach, the Algarve cannot fail to impress. Renowned for world-class golfing facilities, it is also a celebrated destination for tennis, water sports and a host of other fun activities to suit everyone from serious sportspeople to those seeking fun family holidays.
The activity the Algarve is most famous for is, undoubtedly, golf. Some of the finest courses in the world can be found here, with greens suitable for everyone from beginners to experienced players. So, whatever level you are looking to play at, you’ll be able to find it here.
Indeed, in many cases you will not actually need to stray far from your hotel – or in fact leave your accommodation at all – to enjoy a round or two. Many Portuguese hotels in the region offer excellent golfing facilities, so you can play whenever you please.
Of course, if you’re a really keen golfer, you’re likely to want to try out some of those famous world-class courses. Among the best is Vale do Lobo, which is home to the Royal and Ocean courses. Each of these combines spectacular scenery with some challenging golf, but it may be the Royal that you recognise from advertisements – it is its 16th hole that boasts the famous cliff-top carryover.
What else can I do?
While the destination may be best-known for its golf, there is a wide variety of other activities you can try while you’re here. Horse riding, for example, is available at a number of locations and some establishments offer special deals for holidaymakers, such as having a champagne picnic included in the riding trip.
It is a good idea to choose a riding school that provides excursions with guides who are really familiar with the local area; this way, you can rely on them to point out interesting things like local wildlife along the way.
Tennis is another very popular option and, as with golf, there are some splendid facilities dotted all over the region. The Lagos Tennis Club, for example, is ideal if you’re staying in the popular city, while plenty of hotels also boast courts you can play on.
Alternatively, if you’re keen to combine getting active with exploring, cycling and hiking are excellent choices. With numerous places to hire bicycles and plenty of spectacular terrain to discover, this really is a great way to make the most of the beautiful surroundings and see a little more of the Algarve than you might otherwise.
Its cliff-top paths are a good choice if you’re eager to enjoy some sea views, with those at Carvoeiro being particularly scenic. Once a small fishing village, it is also a great place to try water sports such as jet skiing and diving.
Indeed, the Algarve as a whole is an excellent destination to enjoy a dip in the sea, whether you’d like to swim, sail or snorkel. If you’re on family holidays, you’re likely to find little ones are especially enchanted with a snorkelling trip, which will allow you all to see the amazing marine life without having to undergo the special training that scuba diving requires.
